What is an NPI?

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to individual healthcare providers and healthcare organizations in the United States. Every NPI includes a check digit, which lets software verify that a number is well-formed before checking whether it's actually assigned to a provider.

How to find an NPI number

You can look up a provider's NPI by searching their name or organization above -- most providers and healthcare organizations list their NPI on billing statements, insurance cards, prescriptions, or their practice's website. If you already have the 10-digit number, enter it directly to see the full record.

Individual vs. organization NPIs

NPPES assigns two types of NPI. A Type 1 (individual) NPI identifies a single healthcare provider, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or therapist. A Type 2 (organization) NPI identifies a healthcare organization, such as a hospital, clinic, or group practice. An individual provider can also work at an organization that has its own separate NPI.

What NPPES data represents

This tool is built on the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), the official government registry of NPIs. NPILayer imports the official monthly full-replacement file and weekly incremental updates, so results reflect what providers have reported to CMS -- not a third-party or crowdsourced directory.

Limitations of NPI data

An NPI record confirms that a provider or organization is enumerated in NPPES. It does not confirm that a provider is currently licensed, board-certified, accepting new patients, participating in a specific insurance network, or actively practicing at the listed location. Always verify current status directly with the provider or your insurer.
