Terms of Service

Effective September 27, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and JE Design Studio Inc. ("NPILayer", "we", "us"). They govern your use of npilayer.com, our free lookup tools, and the NPILayer API at api.npilayer.com (together, the "Service"). By using the Service or creating an account you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you use the Service on behalf of a company, you confirm you have authority to bind that company.

Important: provider data in the Service comes from public NPPES records. An NPI does not indicate licensure, credentialing, network participation, or current practice status. See Section 6 before you rely on the data.

1. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 18 and able to form a binding contract. You agree to give accurate account information and to keep it current. You are responsible for activity under your account, including activity by anyone you give access to.

2. API keys

Keep your API keys confidential and do not embed them in public client-side code, public repositories, or anywhere others can read them. If a key is exposed, revoke it in your dashboard. Requests made with your keys count against your account's quota. We may disable a key we believe has been compromised or misused.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Break the law or use the Service to harass, stalk, defraud, or discriminate against anyone
  • Send protected health information or other patient data to the Service
  • Circumvent, evade, or interfere with rate limits, quotas, or authentication, including by creating multiple accounts or keys to multiply a plan's allowance
  • Use automated tools to scrape the free lookup pages instead of using the API
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, probe, or gain unauthorized access to the Service or its infrastructure
  • Use the Service to build a competing provider data API, or resell or redistribute raw API output as a stand-alone data product or bulk dataset
  • Misrepresent NPILayer data as credentialing, licensure, or primary-source verification
  • Represent that NPILayer endorses you or your product, or that we are affiliated with CMS or any government agency

You may use API responses inside your own applications, websites, and workflows, including showing results to your own users.

4. Plans, quotas, and rate limits

Each plan includes a monthly request quota and a per-minute burst limit, shown on our pricing page and described in the rate limit documentation. Quotas apply per account, not per key. When your monthly quota is used up, the API returns HTTP 429 until your next billing period begins, unless you upgrade. Requests rejected for invalid authentication or for exceeding the burst limit do not count toward your monthly quota. We may change plan limits and features, and we will give notice of changes that reduce what a paid plan includes.

5. Fees, billing, and cancellation

Paid plans are subscriptions billed in advance through Stripe, either monthly or, where we offer it, annually. They renew automatically at the end of each billing period until canceled. You authorize us and Stripe to charge your payment method for the plan price and any applicable taxes. You can cancel at any time from the billing portal in your dashboard. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then. We may change prices with advance notice, and the new price applies from your next billing period.

Monthly plans. Fees are non-refundable except where required by law or where we agree otherwise in writing.

Annual plans. If you ask us for a refund within 14 days of your first payment for an annual plan, we will refund that payment in full. After those 14 days, annual fees are non-refundable except where required by law or where we agree otherwise in writing. To request a refund, email [email protected]. Your monthly request quota applies on annual plans in the same way as on monthly plans, and unused requests do not roll over.

Plan changes. You can change your plan, or switch between monthly and annual billing, from the billing portal in your dashboard. Upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated: you are charged the difference for the rest of the current billing period. Downgrades also take effect immediately, and any unused amount is credited to your account and applied to future invoices. Credits are not paid out as cash refunds, except where required by law. The limits of your new plan apply as soon as the change takes effect, including for the current monthly quota window.

6. Data sources and disclaimers

Provider records are derived from publicly available data published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by CMS or the U.S. government.

  • Not verification. An NPI does not prove that a provider is currently licensed, credentialed, board-certified, accepting patients, participating in an insurance network, or practicing at a listed location. The Service is not credentialing or primary-source verification.
  • Not a consumer report. The Service is not a consumer reporting agency, and you must not use it to make decisions about eligibility for credit, insurance, employment, or any purpose covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
  • Freshness. Our data is refreshed from CMS files on a schedule and can lag behind NPPES. Records may be incomplete, outdated, or contain errors present in the source.
  • Approximate distance. Geographic search is based on ZIP code centroids, not street addresses. Distances and radius results are approximate.
  • Not medical advice. Nothing in the Service is medical, legal, or professional advice, and it should not be used to make treatment decisions.

Taxonomy data. Provider taxonomy codes and descriptions come from the Health Care Provider Taxonomy code set. Copyright 2026 American Medical Association. The code set is provided “AS IS” without warranty of any kind, and neither the AMA, the NUCC, nor any NUCC member is responsible for any consequences of its use, non-use or interpretation. You may not change the taxonomy data (other than formatting needed to display it), create derivative works of it, or use the name of the AMA or the NUCC to promote your products. If you display or redistribute it, you must include this copyright notice and these disclaimers.

You are responsible for independently verifying any information before you rely on it, particularly where patient care, payment, or compliance is involved.

7. Our rights and your rights

We and our licensors own the Service, including its software, design, documentation, and the NPILayer name and logo. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to access and use the Service. The underlying NPPES data is public and remains subject to the terms of its source. We do not claim ownership of it, but our normalization, indexing, and compilation of it are protected.

If you send us feedback or suggestions, you allow us to use them without restriction or payment.

8. Availability and changes

We work to keep the Service available and accurate, but we do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation and we do not offer a service level agreement. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you in advance of breaking changes to the API.

9. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access, with notice where practical, if you breach these Terms, put the Service or other users at risk, fail to pay, or if we are required to by law. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including Sections 6, 7, and 10 through 14.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

THE SERVICE AND ALL DATA ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN DISCLAIMERS, SO SOME OF THIS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, JE DESIGN STUDIO INC. AND ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AFFILIATES WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE AND (B) US$100.

12. Indemnification

You agree to defend and indemnify us against claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the Service in breach of these Terms, your violation of law, or your infringement of a third party's rights.

13. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to conflict of law rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Michigan, and you consent to their personal jurisdiction. Before filing a claim, you agree to contact us and try in good faith to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.

14. General

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make a material change we will update the effective date and, where appropriate, notify you by email or in the Service. Continued use after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
